Québec City Program Overview

LavalBeing the first francophone university in North America and a leader among research universities in Canada, Université Laval has a strong reputation for its traditions, teaching, research and creativity. It was founded as the Seminaire de Québec in 1663, and later received a charter from Queen Victoria that transformed it into Université Laval in 1852.

The University has a student population of nearly 35,000 including 2,000 international students. Students are offered the following services:

Library: Access to over four million publications and an impressive number of multimedia resources.

Orientation and Psychological Counseling: Professionals help students sort out matters in their student or personal life (i.e. academic difficulties, career goals and planning).

Student Activities Office (SASC): Encourages and promotes cultural and social initiatives by students in a variety of events such as exhibitions, films/videos, musical performances, improvisation, dance, creative writing, and other projects.

Sports Activities: The University has one of the largest physical education and sports complex in Canada.  There are activities for over 20 indoor and outdoor facilities.  Facilities include five gymnasiums, an arena with two ice rinks, a climbing wall, a fitness room, soccer fields, a swimming pool, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts.

Foreign Student Office: Information and support for arriving students, orientation and referrals for problems that may arise.

Computer Facilities: Students receive a free email address, web space, and have Internet access anywhere on campus.

Restaurants: The University has 30 restaurant outlets on campus.  Snack and vending machines can also be found in university buildings.

Program Type:

Fall term: mid September - mid December
Spring term: mid January - early May
Summer (French courses only): early May - late June and early July - mid August (2 sessions)

Eligibility:

Most majors; minimum junior-standing with strong French language skills; nine credits beyond FREN 004 required for semester or year studies; FREN 002 required for summer language studies

Permit/Visa:

Visa required (Need to apply two months in advance)

Grading System:

Marquette’s Grading Scale is different from the Grading Scale used Laval University. Students will transfer credits back to Marquette for those classes where the student received a grade of C or higher.   Please note that the grades will not be transferred, only the credits for those classes approved. The Grading Scale used at Laval University is the following

  • March 1 for fall term, summer, or year-long
