Founded in 1527, Philipps Universität-Marburg originally set forth its goal as educating “learned, able and God-fearing persons, preachers and officials for Christian benefit and the good of the common land”. Over time, however, the university has expanded into 19 departments employing an impressive 2,000 academic staff and educating over 17,000 students. The university offers a wide variety of different subjects that students can study in numerous combinations, including Languages, Social Sciences, Law, Economics and Medicine, among others.
International Academic Appeal
With a large student population hailing from outside
of Europe, Phillips Universität demonstrates a level of quality
that appeals to students from across the globe. In 1997, Focus magazine
confirmed this, ranking the university as number one overall above
all other German universities, attesting to the quality of teaching
and environment for students.
There are also numerous activities at the university available to Philipps students. The University Summer Festival, Sport Dies, International Week, African Week, and European Week, keep students busy during their time in Marburg, as well as lectures and other functions and festivals.
