Xalapa Program Overview

Universidad CrestThe University of Veracruz is a state institution of higher education considered to be one of the five best universities in México because of its regional and national reputation in academic life, research, publication and artistic endeavors. The main campus of the University of Veracruz is located in Xalapa, the state capital of Veracruz.

Program Type

This is a Marquette-sponsored program. For information on how financial aid may apply, please see the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Living

Students live in private homes with Mexican families.

Dates

The program lasts for six weeks from mid-June to late July.

Eligibility

The program is open to undergraduates (with a minimum 2.5 GPA), graduate students (with a minimum 3.0 GPA) and Spanish teachers. Applicants must have completed one year of college Spanish.

Language

Courses are taught in Spanish by professors at the University of Veracruz, and students are paired with individual tutors to assist in their language study.

Subjects

Spanish, Arts & Sciences, History, Anthropology, and Sociology classes are available.

Grading Scale

This program uses an A-F scale, and grades transfer along with credits.

Program Fee

The program cost is based upon the number of undergraduate or graduate units taken. Please note that the fees listed below may be subject to increases.

The program fee includes the following:

  1. Application and registration fees
  2. Tuition for number of units taken
  3. Housing for the entire six-week program with a Mexican family
  4. Three meals a day (except during field trips)
  5. Round-trip transportation from Chicago-Mexico City
  6. Transfer by bus to and from Mexico City-Xalapa
  7. Airport transfer and taxes
  8. Travel assistance
  9. Access to sports and library facilities
  10. Individual tutor
  11. Entrance fee to cultural events, concerts and film series
  12. Routine medical consultation for minor ailments (not including medicine)

Additional Costs: Incidentals (books, refreshments, etc.) and entertainment will vary according to the individual.

Payment Schedule

Your $250 non-refundable program deposit will be applied toward the total program fees within a week after acceptance. Full payment of tuition and remaining program fee balance is due to the Bursar’s Office by mid-May.

Xalapa Program requirements:

  • A completed application signed by applicant (and parents, if applicant is under 18)
  • Two faculty letters of recommendation (one should be from a Spanish professor)
  • Two official transcripts of grades

Additional Requirements After Acceptance

  • $250 program fee deposit (non-refundable but applicable to the total program fee) within a week after provisional acceptance
  • Full payment of tuition and program fees (due by mid-May)
