Reverend James T. Bretzke, S.J., to hold the Reverend Francis Wade, S.J., Chair for Spring 2015.
Rev. James T. Bretzke, S.J., is a Milwaukee native and the son of two Marquette Business School alums, Carl F. Bretzke and Mary A. Hoch, who were married at the Gesu. He attended Holy Family School in Whitefish Bay, and entered the Wisconsin Province of the Jesuits immediately after graduating from Marquette High School in 1970, and currently is Professor of Moral Theology on the Ecclesiastical Faculty of the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.
Prior to this he served as chair of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of San Francisco and has also taught in the Pontifical University in Rome where he did his doctorate in Confucian—Christian ethics, Sogang University in Seoul, The Jesuit School of Theology-at-Berkeley, and as Visiting Professor at the Loyola School of Theology in Manila.
Fr. Bretzke has authored over 90 scholarly articles and reviews, and 7 books, including Handbook of Roman Catholic Moral Terms (2013), which received the 2014 2nd place award by the Catholic Press Association for Best Reference Book, Consecrated Phrases: A Latin Theological Dictionary (3rd, ed. 2103), which likewise had received the same award from the Catholic Press Association for the first edition in 1998, and and A Morally Complex World: Engaging Contemporary Moral Theology (2004) which is now being released as an E-book. His article “A Burden of Means: Interpreting Recent Catholic Magisterial Teaching on End-of-Life Issues" published in the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics 26 (2, 2006): 183-200 was chosen by College Theology Society as the best theology article award in 2007.
Currently he is working on a new book tentatively entitled Still a Morally Complex World: Moving Into the 21st Century which he hopes to complete while at Marquette.
