July 8-11, 2009
This course consists of an intensive four-day anatomical dissection and kinesiological review. Even-year summers focus on the lower extremity, and odd-year summers focus on the upper extremity. The primary purpose of this course is to provide clinicians with a solid anatomical and kinesiologic basis for understanding normal and abnormal function of the musculoskeletal system. This information is essential for the development of effective treatment programs.
This course is designed for medical and/or health professionals who wish to integrate their own clinical experience with the sciences of anatomy and kinesiology. We feel that a first-hand view of the structure of the musculoskeletal system is a valuable experience for the clinician who treats and/or educates patients with limb dysfunction. This course is especially relevant to physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists and assistants, chiropractors, athletic trainers, physician assistants, and orthopedic nurse practitioners. The encompassing functional nature of the course will, however, provide clinical relevance to anyone who treats patients with neurologic or other non-orthopedic problem.
Fees
Regular enrollment fee is $675 per person. Graduates of MU and/or clinicians who work in settings which have a contractual agreement with MU to provide clinical education may enroll for $615. Fees include all breaks, lunches and the Friday evening dinner at one of Milwaukee's fine restaurants. Fee also covers all course materials including handouts, use of dissection tools, aprons, cadaver and anatomy and dissection texts. Please bring clothes and shoes appropriate dissection.

Course Director, will be responsible for the kinesiology lectures and will assist with all anatomical dissections. In 1976, Dr. Neumann received a B.S. in physical therapy from the University of Florida. After several years of clinical practice and graduate study, he received a Ph.D. in Exercise Science from the University of Iowa. Don joined the faculty at Marquette University in 1986, where he is currently a Professor in the Physical Therapy Department. In 1994, Dr. Neumann received the “Teacher of the Year Award” at Marquette University; in 2006, he was named by the Carnegie Foundation as Wisconsin’s College Professor of the Year. Dr. Neumann has also received numerous top national awards from the American Physical Therapy Association, which has recognized his research, teaching, and other scholarly activity (for details see Dr. Neumann's web page). Over the years, Dr. Neumann’s research and teaching projects have been funded by the National Arthritis Foundation and, more recently, the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Don’s teachings are based on years of clinical experience combined with extensive knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology. He is the author of Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System: Foundations for Physical Rehabilitation, published by Elsevier (2002). Don is Associate Editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. Don has received three Fulbright Scholarships to teach kinesiology in Kaunas Medical University in Lithuania (2002), and in Semmelweis Medical University in Budapest, Hungary (2005 and 2006).
will be coordinating the classroom anatomical instruction and will serve as a laboratory faculty member for the dissections. Dr. Rajala received a B.A. in biology from the University of Colorado in 1972, a Ph.D. in anatomy from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1976, and a BS in physical therapy from Marquette University in 1988. He is currently an Associate Professor of Anatomy in the College of Health Sciences at Marquette University.
received his B.S. in physical therapy from the University of Montreal, his M.S. in sports medicine from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his Ph.D. in biomechanics from the Pennsylvania State University. He is currently a Professor at Marquette University, teaching orthopedics in the Department of Physical Therapy. He is also the current editor-in-chief of the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy. Dr. Simoneau has been the recipient of several teaching and research awards including the 2004 Chattanooga Research Award presented by the APTA, the 2003 Dorothy E. Baethke - Eleanor Carlin Award for excellence in academic teaching presented by the APTA, the 2001 Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence presented by Marquette University and the 2000 Award for Excellence in Teaching of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy section of the APTA. Dr. Simoneau is the author of a number of research articles and book chapters related to orthopedic physical therapy and biomechanics.
