The Marquette Core Curriculum (MCC) is the recipient of two major external grants to support curricular development in the Methods of Inquiry course (CORE 1929) and across the Discovery Tier.

At the Foundations level, a grant from the Council of Independent College’s Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) initiative is funding a strategic reframing of the required CORE 1929 course to highlight the value of interdisciplinarity in students’ personal and professional formation. New modules connecting interdisciplinary learning with vocational discernment and Marquette’s Professional Formation Competencies launched this fall and feedback from the courses will inform connections to vocation at other levels of the MCC, especially the Culminating course (CORE 4929).

A second grant, from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations (AVDF), is supporting a project that will strengthen the connections between classes in the MCCC’s Discovery Tier by introducing new “guiding questions” for each theme. These questions will become the focal point for inquiry-based learning in the Discovery Tier, enabling faculty and students to see common links across MCC courses in the humanities, social sciences, and natural science and math.

Updates and results from these grant projects will be shared with the university community in the coming months. Please keep an eye out for invitations to provide input on the AVDF grant project’s development of the new guiding questions for the Discovery themes. Surveys will go out to stakeholders across campus and faculty teaching in the Discovery Tier will be invited to participate in feedback sessions in Fall 2023 and course design workshops in Spring 2024.
