Who is it for?

This program offers law enforcement officers an opportunity to strengthen their leadership and management skills in order to better serve their departments and their communities while putting themselves in a good position for promotion. 

Officers completing the graduate certificate program may apply all twelve credits earned to Marquette’s Master’s Degree Program in Public Service with a specialization in Administrative Justice.

Program Objectives

The objectives of the graduate certificate program in law enforcement leadership and management are as follows:

• Apply ethical frameworks to frequently experienced ethical dilemmas, which will result in socially responsible policing.
• Collaborate with communities in solving socially complex problems that are frequently linked to criminal behavior.
• Achieve understanding of resource management and resource allocation in law enforcement in order to operate and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of a law enforcement agency.
• Practice risk management principles to minimize civil liabilities by knowing the current legal responsibilities of law enforcement administrators.
• Demonstrate the cultural and communication skills necessary to interact in a reciprocal exchange that honors the human dignity of all persons.
• Apply critical thinking skills to evaluate the relationship between criminal justice theory and the law enforcement discipline in order that law enforcement practice is aligned with current criminal justice theory.

Admission Requirements

1. A completed application form and fee;
2. Official transcripts from all current and previous college/universities except Marquette;
3. Three letters of recommendation;
4. (For international students only) a TOEFL score or other appropriate proof of English proficiency;
5. An undergraduate degree from a recognized college or university;
6. A certificate course work planning form;
7. Applicants are employed as law enforcement officers.

Curriculum

The graduate certificate program requires completion of 4 courses (12 credit hours) from a prescribed list of ADJU and PUBS courses.
