Organization - Microsoft Research, Mobile Computing Research Center

Job Title - Research Software Development Engineer II

Resources used to find your position
Mainly applying directly to company websites. The Career Center provided some excellent interview training, which really helped develop my soft interview skills.

What you enjoy most about your position
Developing innovative products and services that are used by millions of people. The culture here at Microsoft is awesome; I love the collaboration and setting my own hours. Plus, Microsoft is so huge and diverse, moving to a different team is like experiencing another company, but without all the hassle. Being able to walk down the halls and chat with some of the most brilliant minds in the industry is an amazing experience.

Advice and tips for students in your field
Don't settle for a local position if that is not what you truly aspire to. There are scores of opportunities in Silicon Valley and the Puget Sound. Get with a company whose business is software, and you will have a much greater chance of enjoying what you do. Practice hard for an interview, and have people mock interview you a few times. I recommend "Cracking the Coding Interview" to get you up to speed on the types of questions you may be asked.
Networking, no matter how painful, really is important. I didn't do it enough before finding a job, but at least there is ample opportunity once you are employed. Make contacts within your company and keep those lines open; you never know who you might end up working with down the road. Finally, keep an open mind. Don't slip into the mindset that a certain company wouldn't be a good fit for you, especially before you even interview! And if you don't get the perfect job, don't settle for too long. Hobby and side projects will keep you sharp and motivated until you can move to something better.

What do/will you miss most about MU?
The Broken Yolk, working in the lab late into the night, pizza and soldering irons, falling asleep in a chair in Raynor under the sun, having everywhere I need to go be within walking distance, and the professors who helped me get where I am today.
