If you are like many college students today, you have a personal profile on Facebook or a different online social network. Your profile helps you keep in touch with friends and is a place for you to post information about yourself. But it is not just your friends who might learn about you from your profile, and you can use an online social network for more than just socializing. Have you ever thought about how your profile could impact your career, both negatively and positively?
According to NYTimes.com, many companies that recruit on college campuses have been using search engines like Google and Yahoo to conduct background checks on seniors looking for their first job. But now, some recruiters are looking up applicants on social networking sites, where college students often post risqué photographs and comments about drinking, recreational drug use and sexual exploits. At best, this type of profile can make students look immature and unprofessional. At worst, it can raise serious questions about their judgment and eliminate them as job candidates.
It is not difficult for you to reduce this risk. Most importantly, you can look at your pages on Facebook and other sites with fresh eyes and remove photographs or text that may be inappropriate to show to potential employers. You can also apply settings on Facebook that significantly limit access to their pages. And it wouldn’t hurt to make the security settings stricter than you think is necessary. You never know if a recruiter is an alum of your school or if they work with someone who is.
Despite the potential negative consequences for your career, Facebook and other online social networks could also have positive consequences. Networking is a crucial component of any job search, so why not use Facebook to enhance your career network? According to Webworkerdaily.com, one way of doing this is to join groups related to your career interests. Many groups on Facebook are purely for fun, but there are quite a few that can provide useful information and professional connections. You can also use Facebook to look for career-related events. There are opportunities for good, face-to-face business networking if you’re open to it. For example, you can use Facebook’s built-in events application to see what conferences and events your career connections may be attending.
So, next time you log in to your private profile to figure out your plans for the evening, don’t forget to check out what networking event you could attend to find job opportunities!
