Are you thinking about going to graduate or professional school after you graduate from Marquette? If so, it is a good idea to start planning about two years before the semester you intend to begin a program. Because many graduate programs have fall application and financial aid filing deadlines, planning should start during the JUNIOR year.
The steps you should follow for applying to graduate or professional school are:
1. Researching and Choosing a Graduate or Professional Program
- Determine whether or not graduate or professional school is for you
- Create a list of CRITERIA for your graduate program
- Research careers, institutions, and programs
- Choose about five programs and institutions that meet your criteria
2. Preparing Application Materials
- Develop a calendar of deadline dates
- Sign up to take required admissions exams
- Gather application materials
- Write your personal essay or “statement of purpose”
- Pay non-refundable fee
- Complete a separate financial aid application
- Request registrar’s office to send transcripts to admissions office
- Obtain letters of recommendation
3. After You Have Submitted Your Applications
- Call all institutions to ensure they have received your complete application materials
- Possibly interview for assistantships or entrance into programs and institutions
- WAIT for notification from schools
4. CELEBRATE your acceptance to the program of choice!
- Send deposit to the institution of your choice
- Notify other institutions of your decision, allowing them to accept others in your place
- Send thank you notes to your letter of recommendation writers and inform them of your plans

The Career Services Center is participating in an internship survey being conducted by one of our research partners, Dr. Phil Gardner from Michigan State University. Dr. Gardner is looking for students who are currently on an internship or co-op or who have recently completed one to complete an on-line survey.
If interested please read the following information provided by Dr. Gardner and follow the web link to complete the survey.
I am involved in a large study several aspects of internship and co-op participation. I am still collecting data and am seeking input from students who had experiential experience (internships and co-ops) during the 2007 calendar year. I will be able to break out data on school size and public and private when the reports come out. If you have any students who could help simply have them go to the following web site and complete the survey:
