Welcome Marquette Parents

Congratulations!
If you are viewing this webpage you must have a son or daughter in college and engaged in the career development process!

With the help of the Career Services Center, your son or daughter can be sure to:

  1. Select a career path based on interests, skills, and values.
  2. Explore and research career options based on majors.
  3. Gain skills through career-related experiences such as internships, co-op, part-time or summer job, volunteer activities and service learning.
  4. Develop job search materials and a plan to pursue career goals.

Students are not required to engage in any activities offered by the Career Services Center.  However, each year students take the initiative and attend workshops, schedule individual career counseling appointments, send resumes for critiquing, and access resources to assist them in achieving their career goals.

Please help us help your son or daughter by encouraging them to access resources and services tailored to them.

We have created Career Development: A parent’s guide to helping sons and daughters for parents to assist us!

If you have any feedback or questions, please contact me.  I look forward to serving your college student!

April 2012

Summer typically brings thoughts of outdoors barbeques, warm sunshine and hanging out on the beach, but summer is also a great time to get ahead a head start on your career goals for the year! Help your students stay on their toes with some great tips on how to utilize their summer.

No matter what year your young adult is studying, there are plenty of things to do over the summer months to keep his or her resume and job search fresh and updated. Have your freshmen start planning early and using his or her summer job to build a transferable skillset with customer service and problem-solving skills. Your sophomores can go one step further and take action this summer by getting an internship, volunteering for a non-profit, or studying abroad, all experiences to widen their horizons. Junior students should prepare for their full-fledged fall job search by triple checking their resume and gathering portfolio samples for the road ahead. And for your seniors: if they have found a job, help them “Real Life”-proof their wardrobe and budget. If they are still on the hunt, advise them to stay focused and optimistic! Through networking, informational interviews and internships, they can continue building their resume and preparing for that first job.

And all the while your son or daughter is preparing for the summer, remind them that help is available! While the Career Services Center no longer has walk-in hours during the summer, we are open Monday through Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm for appointments, consultations and mock-interviews. Advise your student to coincide his or her summer activities with resume builders and to keep plugging away to make the most out of this sunny vacation.
