  • During my first year on campus, I’d like to submit publications about my current research projects. As a rhetorician of health and medicine, I study the relationship among medicine, rhetoric, and technical communication. My current projects report on how medical professionals develop and employ communication strategies in two unpredictable workplaces: emergency medical services and public health emergency response.
  • I’d like to connect with colleagues interested in improving writing practices in health care. Specifically, I’d like to connect with colleagues who work with the Institute for Palliative and End of Life Care and the Wisconsin Geriatric Education Center.
  • I’d like to learn more about teaching and research opportunities with local community partners and about faculty-led study abroad opportunities.

  • During my first year on campus, I’d like to start understanding how writing is taught and supported across campus and to attend a Golden Eagles basketball game, maybe when they're playing my alma mater, Villanova.
  • I’d like to connect with colleagues interested in how students learn to write and communicate in their courses/major. My previous research has been on student writing in the sciences with a focus on medical/health communication, so those are areas of special interest.
  • I’d like to learn more about Marquette's Jesuit background and about the Wisconsin outdoors, especially the best spots to hike, bike, and cross-country ski.

  • During my first year on campus, I’d like to work with the faculty, undergraduates, and graduate students in the Department of History to teach our university community why “history matters” and how they can be a part of making history everyday … and work on finishing my dissertation, of course!
  • I’d like to connect with colleagues interested in research that extends the bounds of our academic studies beyond the walls of the university in order to serve the community in which we teach.
  • I’d like to learn more about Marquette’s efforts to become a Hispanic-serving institution over the next 10 years, and help the university engage in outreach efforts with prospective Hispanic students in Wisconsin and around the Midwest.​

I want to do this by developing an Applied Physics major in conjunction with the Engineering school, and by building a plasma physics research lab appropriate for undergrad research.

  • I’d like to learn more about local activities for families with small children. (My family includes me, my wife — also a professor at Marquette — and a 16-month-old boy attending Marquette's Child Care Center.)

  • I’d like to learn more about establishing connections and potential collaborations with researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin. I know that several faculty at Marquette are involved in these types of collaborations and I’d like to hear about their experiences.
