Social Changes in Current Spain

3 sem. hrs.
Fall

The primary focus of this course is for students to further understand the context of their service learning work while in Madrid by studying social and political issues impacting Spain. The class will focus on reforms in education, political culture/behavior, population in Spain, immigration, and changes in daily life: sex roles, work, and family.

Each class session will incorporate readings for allowing students to reflect on their strengths, weaknesses, values, and personal worldview. A few of the themes to be addressed in this course will be: the need for Spain to welcome more immigrants in the face of a declining birth rate, and the racism encountered by many immigrants upon legal entry into Europe.

Service Learning: In addition to the classroom work, this course requires a service learning placement in order for the student to receive practical engagement with the local community.
