A survey of 20th century Spanish theater and poetry. Analysis of works by Unamuno, Valle-Inclán, García Lorca, Miguel Mihura, Antonio Gala and Alfonso Sastre. Detailed study of the Generations of 1927 and 1936; the Franco and post-Franco poetic generations

A panoramic vision of the image of the female in Spanish literature from the Middle Ages to the present moment, with emphasis on the analysis of texts from the Twentieth Century.

Cervantes

This class aims to study the life and works of Miguel de Cervantes. Cervantes’ written works are considered to be a precursor to today’s modern literature. This course will study and analyze different types of writing by Cervantes: 3 short novels (novelas ejemplares), several passages from his most famous work El Quijote, and 3 theatrical works.

Spanish-American Literature I

This course presents a panoramic overview of the major writers and relevant literary manifestations present in the Hispanic World from the Pre-Columbian days (e.g. Aztecs, Mayans and Incas), the Baroque, the Age of Enlightenment and Romanticism until the insurgence of Modernismo. Writers studied generally include: Colón, Cortés, Las Casas, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Sor Juana, Bello, Sarmiento and Marti, among others.

Spanish-American Literature II

Spring

Literary developments from Modernismo to the present. This course offers a review of various literary modes of thought and tendencies present in the Hispanic world throughout the 20th century in areas such as poetry — post modernism, avant garde movements, the new poetry — the short story, the short novel and the essay. The Boom and the post-Boom tendencies are also included. Writers studied generally include: Dario, Rodó, Quiroga, Mistral, Huidobro, Neruda, Guillén, Paz, Borges, Fuentes, Garcia Marquez, Allende, Poniatowska and Menchú, among others.
