1. Complete academic integrity tutorial by Oct. 24

During the 2014-15 academic year, Marquette will take a more proactive approach toward building knowledge and developing a culture around personal and academic integrity. Several new initiatives will remind students, faculty and staff of the importance of academic integrity. A mandatory online tutorial on academic integrity has been developed for undergraduate students. All undergraduate students must complete the tutorial and exam by Friday, Oct. 24, in order to register for spring 2015 classes.

To complete the online tutorial and exam:

  • Go to d2l.mu.edu
  • Login with your Marquette username and password (same as eMarq and CheckMarq)
  • Click the Academic Integrity link on the top right

2. Complete online form to request lunch with President Lovell

Students interested in attending lunch with President Michael R. Lovell can complete an online form on the Division of Student Affairs website. Lunches will be held Sept. 26, Oct. 22 and Nov. 19. Dates will be chosen based on the order in which the request is received. Completing the request form does not guarantee selection for a lunch with President Lovell, as his availability is limited.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs will review all requests and follow up with interested students to confirm whether they have been selected to attend a lunch with President Lovell.

3. Fall career fairs offer internships, career and graduate opportunities

The Career Services Center will hold a Fall Career Fair for students seeking full-time jobs, internships, post-graduate service or graduate/professional school opportunities. The non-technical career fair will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the AMU Monaghan Ballrooms. A technical career fair will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the AMU Monaghan Ballrooms.

4. Les Aspin Center for Government to host information sessions

The Les Aspin Center for Government will host information sessions on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 25, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Raynor Memorial Libraries Beaumier Suites B and C. 5. Good Money Challenge now accepting applications

The Social Innovation Initiative is accepting applications for the 2014 Good Money Challenge, which offers $25,000 in funding. The event is open to anyone with an idea or business plan that creates a social or environmental impact.

6. Alpha Xi Delta and Kappa Sigma to host Twister Philanthropy Tournament

Alpha Xi Delta and Kappa Sigma will host a joint philanthropy event, "Twister Frenzy Supporting Autism Speaks and the Fisher House Foundation," Thursday, Sept. 25, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Schroeder Field.

Teams of four will compete head-to-head in the best of two out of three eliminations in Twister. The winner of each round will advance on to the next round. The cost to play is $20 per team of four, plus any extra money to bid on sabotage items, including three for $1 water balloons.

All proceeds go to Alpha Xi Delta's philanthropy, Autism Speaks, and Kappa Sigma's philanthropy, The Fisher House Foundation. Autism Speaks is the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. The Fisher House Foundation builds houses around the country on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times.

7. Soup with Substance: Connecting the dots between immigration and the SOA

Maria Luisa Rosal was born in Guatemala at the height of the civil war. In 1983, her father was a victim of forced disappearance and the rest of her family then fled the country. From this personal background, Rosal will speak on the role of Latin American soldiers trained by the School of the Americas in abuses of human rights and repression of democracy in Latin America, and its influences on immigration and immigration policy. Rosal is now a field organizer for the School of Americas Watch.

Information on the Nov. 21-24 bus trip to the annual School of the Americas Watch vigil in Columbus, Georgia, will be shared at the session.

8. Ignatian Leadership Retreat for first-year students is Sept. 26-28

Campus Ministry is hosting an Ignatian Leadership Retreat, Friday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 28 for first-year students. The retreat is an opportunity for first-year students to join student leaders to reflect on excellence, faith, leadership and service, while building community and having fun.

9. Marquette Theatre presents Thornton Wilder's Our Town

Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer prize-winning drama Our Town will be presented by Marquette Theatre this fall. Set in the small New England town of Grover's Corners in 1901, Our Town returns to the Helfaer stage after 25 years. The story of Emily and George is both charming and heartbreaking while discovering the profound greatness in life's simple moments. Individuals will rediscover this American classic that explores the universal need to find a place to belong and the challenge of appreciating life.

The play will run during the following dates:

  • Thursday Sept. 25, and Friday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Sept. 27, at 2:30 p.m. (will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Helfaer Theatre)

10. EthicsPoint available to anonymously report suspected areas of misconduct on campus

Marquette believes that each member of the campus community has a responsibility to conduct business in an ethical manner and to report, in good faith, any suspected activities of misconduct on campus. The university has selected EthicsPoint, a third-party vendor, to provide a way to report suspected areas of misconduct on campus – anonymously and confidentially. EthicsPoint provides a secure server and toll-free hot-line for faculty, staff, students and vendors to confidentially report activities on campus that may violate federal or state laws and regulations, or university policies and procedures.

Reportable concerns include, but are not limited to:

  • Academic misconduct
  • FERPA violations
  • Misuse of resources
  • Financial fraud
  • Harassment
  • Conflict of interest
  • Software piracy
  • HIPAA violations
  • Scientific misconduct
  • Environmental health and safety matters
  • Vandalism
  • Cheating

11. Milwaukee Project Homeless Connect looking for volunteers

Milwaukee Project Homeless Connect is looking for volunteers for its one-day resource fair Thursday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the AMU. Project Homeless Connect is an event held to provide needed services to homeless Milwaukee residents.

12. Electrical and Computer Engineering hosting colloquium

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will host "Performance-Based Engineering: Opportunities for Integrating Science, Engineering and Policy," Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. in Olin Engineering 202. Dr. Ting Lin, assistant professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering, will deliver the lecture.

13. Free wellness classes available for students

Marquette University Medical Clinic offers free wellness classes for students. Classes begin Monday, Sept. 8, and continue through Thursday, Dec. 4. The classes include: Mindfulness Meditation, Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tao-Well, Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and Yoga, Mondays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. The complete schedule and class descriptions are available online.

Injectable influenza vaccinations will be available to students at several locations throughout campus. The cost of the flu shot is $25. Flu clinics will be held:

15. Marquette to distribute Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education electronically

In an effort to advance environmental sustainability, Marquette will now distribute Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education electronically. Conversations is a national publication that draws on the expertise of faculty and staff at the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States through articles that explore the intersection of university mission with a wide range of topics. Recent issues of Conversations have included articles on core curriculum, athletics, work-life balance, the arts and scientific inquiry.

The online Conversations archives contain back issues that are searchable, and the collection is maintained by Raynor Memorial Libraries. A limited supply of the fall 2014 issue of Conversations is available in the Office of Mission and Ministry, located in Zilber 423.

16. Adult volunteers needed for diabetes study

Adults 40 years or older – with and without Type 2 diabetes – are needed for an exercise science and physical therapy research study. Compensation will be provided.

Interested participants should review the volunteer requirements. Those interested in participating should contact Jonathon Senefeld, teaching assistant.
