Symphonic Band

Directed by Dr. Erik Janners, the Marquette University Symphonic Band is made up of about 130 students from all academic programs. The Symphonic Band performs in three major concerts on campus each year. While most students own their own instruments, the university does have an inventory of brass, woodwind, percussion and string instruments for use by students.

Pep Band

Members of the Symphonic Band may also participate in the Pep Band that performs at all home Men’s and Women’s Basketball Games. The Pep Band also travels with the teams to conference and NCAA tournaments. Band rehearsals are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Varsity Theatre.

Jazz Ensemble

There are two Jazz Ensembles, directed by Dr. Erik Janners, that are comprised of about 20 students each. The Jazz Ensembles meet on Tuesdays, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM and 7:00 - 9:00 PM in the Varsity Theatre. The ensembles perform three concerts a year and for special events on campus.

Orchestra

The Marquette University Orchestra is made up of about 60 students as well as a few alumni and faculty members. The Orchestra meets on Wednesdays from 6:00 - 8:00 PM and on Mondays from 6:30 - 8:00 PM as needed. The Orchestra is directed by Steven Rindt and performs several concerts of classical and contemporary music each year.

Take a Carillon Class

Starting the Spring 2009 semester, MUSI 85: Carillon Discovery will be offered. In this introduction to the world of carillon, the student explores the history, musical characteristics, bell foundries and carillons worldwide through readings, recordings, the Internet and visits to the university carillon. This discovery is designed for a greater appreciation of the carillon for both musicians and non-musicians.
