The Victim/Witness Services Unit provides assistance to members of the Marquette
community affected by crime or crisis situations, including:

• Support in reporting incidents to the university and the appropriate law
  enforcement agencies;
• Support in understanding the criminal justice system;
• Escorts to related appearances and court proceedings;
• Collaboration with university officials in coordinating class and work schedules to
  allow for the necessary court appearances;
• Referrals to university and community service providers; and
  
• Escorts to protect personal safety
  

All officers are trained to provide information about victim/witness services. Officers stay informed of changes in the law and the availability of services, so those in need of assistance can receive the most accurate and helpful information possible.

Any member of the Marquette community who is affected by a criminal incident or crisis situation can receive the benefits of the Department of Public Safety’s Victim/Witness Services program. Originally created in 1986, Victim/Witness Services is available to provide options, information and resources relating to the needs of those involved in the aftermath of a crisis situation. Victim/Witness Services is unique, as it is housed in the Department of Public Safety. This arrangement provides many benefits, including efficiency in processing and investigating reports and an expanded knowledge of and links to the criminal justice system.

The two program members include one officer and one lieutenant, who also serve as crime prevention specialists. Additionally, all of the department’s officers receive training specific to a wide range of victimization issues, including knowledge of university and community resources and the criminal justice system.

In addition to receiving the same training required of all the department’s officers, the two program members receive specialized training in the area of victim services and work collaboratively with local law enforcement agencies and community services providers in identifying and serving the needs of students and employees.

The program’s members have direct links to the university departments associated with vital student and employee services, such as the Office of Student Development, the Office of Residence Life, the Counseling Center, Campus Ministry and Student Health Service. These relationships lead to quick, effective and efficient responses to student and employee needs.
