Color Guard

Marquette University Golden Eagle Battalion Color guard

“If men are to give their best in war they must be united. Discipline seeks

through drill to instill into all ranks this sense of unity, by requiring them

to obey orders as one man. A Ceremonial parade, moreover, provides an

occasion for men to express pride in their performance, pride in the

Regiment or Corps and pride in the profession of Arms.”

-General Sir Harold Alexander, Ceremonial For

the Army Ministry for Defense, Army Department,

November 1968

Cadet Perspective on Color Guard
By: CDT Kellan Sams

In the US military and other similar organizations, the Color guard carries the National Ensign and other flags appropriate to its position in the chain of command. These include the National Ensign (American flag), state flag (Wisconsin), departmental flag (Army), and a unit flag (Marquette Golden Eagle Battalion). In addition to the flag bearers, who are positioned in the center of the Color guard, there are 2 individuals who carry rifles on each side of the guard who serve to protect the colors. Being assigned to the Color guard is considered an honor due to the fact that these individuals present and carry the symbols of their unit and country.

Led by CDT Huebner and CDT Sams, the Marquette University Golden Eagle Battalion Color guard has provided the colors for countless occasions. There are around 15 currently participating cadets who volunteer their time to honor the unit and our country. Each week, an hour is dedicated to practicing and developing a disciplined honorable corps of cadets. These high-speed cadets know what it means to respect our nation’s most patriotic symbol. They can be seen in action at Marquette Men’s and Women’s basketball games. However, soon they will be participating at Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Buck’s games.
