Experience at Service Learning

I came to Marquette in January of 1994 to develop the Service Learning Program and have been here ever since.

Why I like working at Service Learning

I believe service learning is an exciting and very worthwhile teaching/learning method. It benefits students, faculty, and the Milwaukee Community. I love doing program development, and I especially enjoy my interactions with our staff. Through service learning I've gotten to know a terrific group of students over the years.

Experience at Service Learning

"I worked as a Student Coordinator and Staff manager for 2 1/2 years as a Marquette student and became Assistant Administrator as of June 2001."

Why I like working at Service Learning

"As a Marquette student who benefited from doing Service Learning, I watched as the text, philosophies, and research I read for my classes became real, feasible, and concrete. As a teacher in an alternative high school who used Service Learning, I watched as my students were moved, challenged, and changed by their service experiences. As an agency staff member who supervised Service Learners, I watched as my clients got the extra attention that they so desperately longed for and deserved.

Now, as the Assistant Administrator of the Program, I get to watch it all , as well as supervise to make sure the power continues to make a difference. These experiences helped shape who I am today, and I continue to find fulfillment and passion in service. I would not be happy in a position that offered any less."

Why I like working at Service Learning

"I work at Service Learning because the program affords me the opportunity see Marquette's promise to provide an education built on the pillars of excellence, faith, leadership and service daily.  As a Service Learner I enjoyed and learned more from my 2 hour a week experience than my time in lecture.  Being a part of a program that provides this type of educational experience while giving back to the greater community makes me proud to be a Marquette student. "

What do you hope your fellow students will get out of their Service Learning experience?

"I hope that my fellow students are able to gain an appreciation for the diversity that is Milwaukee.  Because college is just as much about learning about those around you as it is learning about yourself, Service Learning offers students the opportunity to explore the wealth of diversity in Milwaukee.  To not take advantage of the limitless educational experiences that can be found at Marquette outside of the classroom would be unfortunate.  It is most definitely possible for students to learn as much from the community as they do from their professors.  I hope that my fellow students are able to recognize this and embrace the opportunity for what it is: extraordinary."

Why I like working at Service Learning

I am actually working for a socially just cause that doesn't provide dissonance for me. I enjoy being able to help students make that connection between their service and learning. Being able to experience what you learn is very important for one's education.

What do you hope your fellow students will get out of their Service Learning experience?

"I hope my fellow students are able to challenge their preconceived notions through this process, which will result in being more open minded to other individuals and cultures.  I hope there is an increased understanding of how individuals came to be in their current situations where some students may originally have apathy and ignorance and instead they develop more compassion and a desire to change the current situation."

Why I like working at Service Learning

It is a really fun and rewarding job. I feel like I am giving back to the community, and l love being able to help the city I grew up adoring. I have a passion for social welfare and justice issues in Milwaukee, especially among the Latino population and am really enjoying becoming more involved in the community I wish to serve after graduation.

What do you hope your fellow students will get out of their Service Learning experience?

I hope other students will be able o open-mindedly serve at their sites and begin to understand the cultural, social, economic, and lingusistic barriers throughout the city of Milwaukee. I also hope they will be able to learn from the connections between their site and classroom, and step outside their comfort zone by interacting with people and places they normally wouldn't
