After signing up with the Service Learning Program, do the following:
1. Call the site contact as soon as possible. Identify yourself as a Marquette Service Learner from the Language Disorders in Children course who has signed up to do service learning at the site. Make sure the site contact knows you are working with their speech-language pathologist or in the speech and language programs.
2. Some sites will require you to complete an orientation that you should try to schedule right away in order to get started with service learning. You will go to the site every week for 2-3 hours throughout the whole semester for a total of about 20 hours. If you encounter any problems or difficulties, please contact your student coordinator in the Service Learning Office immediately at 288-3262 or 288-3264. For serious problems you can also call Corey Young, Assistant Director of the Program at 288-0302.

Description of Agency/Activities: Penfield offers early childhood intervention programs, providing education and rehabilitation for children, infant to age three, with developmental disabilities.
Student Role in Agency: Penfield has two separate Speech and Language groups. The children are diagnosed with speech and-language difficulties or delays. Service Learners will interact with children in projects under the direction of a licensed speech pathologist to help children learn language and socialization skills. There will be opportunities to work both one-on-one and in groups with the children. These groups include children under three years old. Their parents are also encouraged to participate.
