Tuesday, May 18: Faculty Bus Tour
“Who’s Still Standing at the Door?
A Look into Women’s Issues in Milwaukee”
In the spirit of the centennial of women at Marquette, join us on a bus tour through the community and learn more about four of our non-profit community partners who specifically advocate for women. Join with faculty from across the University to learn more about the great work being done in our community, about the agencies’ needs, and about how we can better engage with the community through both service learning and community-based research.

Wednesday, May 19: Faculty Workshop
“Critical Issues in Service Learning: The Intersection Between
My Values, My Teaching, and Student Learning”
Have you ever read a reflection paper or held a class discussion where you say to yourself, “my students are just not getting it?” Have you ever had students say something that made you question how much you should push them to think differently but worried about imposing your own values on them? There are lots of issues that come up in service learning and other forms of experiential learning, in no matter what discipline, surrounding privilege, stereotypes, discrimination, power, injustice, race, and equity. How should we as educators respond to our students and how do we help them to think critically about issues so that they are not walking away from their community experience with bitter stereotypes and broken idealism? How do we grade students when in their reflections they “just aren’t getting it,” because they are not there yet developmentally?
- Come share with us your dilemmas, challenges, and successes
- Brainstorm practical ways to address these issues
- Learn new ways to engage our students in active learning opportunities that will enhance both your teaching and your student’s learning
- Hear from a student and faculty panel who will discuss some of their struggles, experiences, and expertise
- Network with colleagues from across the disciplines and learn about how they grade and assess reflection papers, what kinds of questions they ask their students, and how they structure their students’ classroom and community experience

The Faculty Seminar is open to all faculty, regardless of whether or not they have done service learning in their courses

The bus tour will be limited to the capacity of the coach bus, so be sure to register quickly, as we had a very full bus last year!
