Description of Agency:The Empowering Latino Parents Program is an organization that acts in conjunction with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and focuses on providing adult ESL classes for parents of Hispanic students.
Student Role in Agency: Service Learners will tutor Hispanic parents one-on-one and also participate in group learning activities. The agency wants these parents to develop a close relationship with their tutor and get to know them on a deeper level. Much of the curriculum is based on conversation and talking about real life situations and how these parents can learn to deal with them in an English speaking environment. Therefore, creating an environment of trust and support is very important.
Commitment/Requirements: 2-3 hours per week, every week for the entire semester, plus orientation. Service Learners must serve through the week of April 29th. Spanish proficiency is not required.
