Description of Agency/Activities: Each year, Milwaukee County Cooperative Extension serves approximately 100,000 people where they live and work through over 30 programs in: Family Living, Horticulture & Urban Agriculture, Youth Development and Community, Natural Resources & Economic Development (CNRED). Milwaukee County 4-H as part of the UWEX Youth Development program, has 13 community 4-H clubs with 190+ members. Student Role at Agency: Milwaukee Co. 4-H is looking for adult mentors and project leaders to engage youth in the STEM areas (science, technology, engineering and math). Milwaukee is part of four Wisconsin counties participating in a nationally funded grant program, 4-H Tech Wizards, to connect mentors to youth groups to engage in a STEM related activity. Milwaukee Co. will focus this year on Lego NXT robots. The mentor will work with youth in 5-12th grades engaged in the program teaching LEGO Education Robotics. Mentors will instill a confidence to succeed by nourishing young people’s curiosity for Science and Engineering though hands-on learning using 4-H curriculum. There will be a cumulating event to celebrate the year’s achievements and have a special competition, which will take place in early December. Each mentor would work with a maximum of 5 youth. One would work as part of a larger team with other mentors and youth. Exact dates will be worked out with the mentors, school, and mentor coordinator.
Requirements: Strong communication skills are required to maintain relationships with mentees via phone, e-mail and in person. Previous work with youth and a background in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) is preferred, but not required.
