Days/Hours of Operation:
Description of Agency/Activities: The United Community Center (UCC) is a private, nonprofit, community-based organization dedicated to serving Latinos and residents of Milwaukee's near south side. Their 34 years of experience in serving the Hispanic community has led to the design of specialized, culturally competent services which reach the entire family.
The UCC Community Learning Center (CLC) is one of the many programs UCC offers. Their main objective is to help students improve in their academic performance. The CLC provides homework and tutoring assistance, and gives students the opportunity to participate in enrichment classes in Science, Math, Reading, Language Arts, Arts and Crafts, Computer Technology, Music, and Ceramics. The CLC also strengthens leadership abilities through clubs and classes such as Youth Advisory Council, Chess Club, UCC Kids Bank Board, etc.
Student Role in Agency:
Commitment: Mandatory orientation at the site for 1 hour and two hours per week for the duration of the semester.
Since Service Learners will be working directly with UCC clients, it is required that volunteers be outgoing and personable, show initiative, and enjoy interacting with clients of all ages. They need to own their placement and work to make it a good fit by sharing feedback and being proactive.
