Description of Agency/Activities: Founded in 1996, El Puente serves at-risk students who are in danger of failing their classes. Its mission is to provide a small, safe, and nurturing learning environment where students focus on becoming active members of society. The term "el puente" means "the bridge" and this school aims to bridge their curriculum of a solid academic education grounded in the sciences with other subjects to allow students the most opportunities possible when they graduate. The student population is 14-20 years of age, and is 50% Hispanic.

Student Role in Agency: Tutoring - Provide one-on-one tutoring in reading, math, science or social studies (Tuesday-Thursday shifts between 9:00am -11:30am, and between 12:15pm-3:30pm). Students will work in several classrooms at El Puente. While they will often be assigned a specific student, they also will be in a classroom environment where several students will need occasional help. Service Learners will need to be able to take initiative in asking students if they need their help. Bilingual skills are helpful, but not required.

Commitment: Orientation at the site, plus 2 hours per week throughout the semester.
