English Language Partners of WI

Transportation: Take the #14 bus from in front of McCormick and get off on 29th and Forest Home. Walk 1 block south to the site. English Language Partners of WI is located inside of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, with the entrance on the left of the building.

Orientation: 30 minutes prior to first class. The orientation does not count as service.

Description of Agency/Activities: English Language Partners of Wisconsin helps the people of their community learn English. Gethsemane Lutheran Church saw a need in the community to teach Spanish and thus, English Language Partners began. The majority of the students at English Language Partners are Latinos who have the desire to learn and better communicate in their jobs,. Different than other English learning programs, students are placed in small groups depending on first language literacy, whatever their first language may be.

Student Role in Agency: Serve as an English Conversation Partner by tutoring immigrants. This is a great opportunity to meet interesting individuals from another culture.

Commitment: Tutors must possess the desire to learn about people from other cultures, patience and empathy, Standard English, the ability to follow instructions, and the responsibility to show up on the days you are assigned. Spanish skills are not required. Volunteer application and tutor agreement are required to volunteer.
