- 2669 N Richards St. (North) By Bus: Take any eastbound bus to Wisconsin Ave and Milwaukee St. Take the #11 bus north to Holton and Center Street. Walk 2 blocks west to Richards street. By Car: Take I-43 N to Exit 74 (Locust Street). Turn right onto W Locust St. Turn right onto N Richards St.

- 239 W. Washington (South) By Bus: Take the #14 or #30 bus east on Wisconsin until Water St., from Water take the #11 or #15 going south to Washington St. Walk west until you reach 239 W. Washington. By car: Take Wisconsin Ave to N 6th St. Turn right onto 6th St, take it across the bridge. Take the 2nd exit at the traffic circle and turn left onto W Washington St.

Guadalupe Jo's is on 30th and Greenfield Ave. By Car: Take Wisconsin Ave to 27th St. Turn left onto 27th St/WI-57. Continue on S Layton Blvd. Turn right onto W Greenfield Ave.

Description of Agency/Activities: Guadalupe is a federally funded Head Start program for families with children ages 3 to 5. The five centers and sixteen classrooms are very culturally diverse. Many of the children are bilingual or speak Spanish or Hmong as their primary language. Ten of the classrooms have dual sessions in the morning and afternoon, Monday through Thursday, with 17 children enrolled in each session. Ten classrooms are all day and meet Monday through Friday. Each classroom has a teacher and assistant teacher, and often a parent volunteer as well. 10% of the enrollment slots are reserved for children with disabilities.
Student Role in Agency: MU students work directly with the children, assisting the teachers in the classrooms. This is a really great site for people who like to work with kids. There is a lot of direct interaction with the kids, who love to have attention from others. The teachers are also very friendly and appreciate the help from students. One other really neat thing about Guadalupe Head Start is that other languages are spoken in the classroom. It's a great way to expose yourself to other cultures. This is a fun and enlightening site that allows you to enjoy yourself and the kids.
*Only students proficient in Spanish should sign up for the South (239 W. Washington) site.*
Commitment:
- 1 to 1 1/2- hour group orientation held at site where you are volunteering .
- One 2-hour block of time per week for the remainder of the semester.
- Students must get a TB test before beginning the service.
- If you have not already completed Marquette's Working With Minors training, you must do so after Sign-Up Night. More information will be available at Sign-Up Night.
