Description of Agency/Activities: Literacy Services of Wisconsin has been serving the basic education needs of adults in our community for over 50 years. Our small staff is complemented by 400 volunteers, who serve as tutors for our learners and deliver high-quality, on-on-one instruction to teach adults to read, write, and more.
Student Role in Agency: As our organization aims to expand the ways in which we utilize volunteers, we have various projects to complete to aid in this process. Those projects include assisting our staff with the creation of important organizational documents, including a Volunteer Handbook, standardized job descriptions for our volunteers, and a Volunteer/Agency Agreement; the design and implementation of targeted volunteer recruitment strategies; and improvements to our volunteer screening and orientation processes.
Commitment/Requirements: A Service Learner’s hours can be relatively flexible, with students completing 20 hours by the end of the semester (about 2 hours/week). Ideally, the Service Learner would spend a few hours per week working onsite towards completion of specific tasks.
