Description of Agency/Activities: At the MVLC sites, volunteer attorneys and MU law students serve the Milwaukee community by providing pro bono legal information and referral services to individuals in need of legal assistance, while providing the students with the opportunity to serve the community, enhance their classroom learning, observe practicing attorneys and be mentored by same.
Student Role in Agency: Students doing intake at our clinics would engage in the following tasks:
- Greet clients seeking services (Spanish needed for Hillview location on Wednesdays)
- Briefly explain nature of service provided to clients
- Take names of clients, as well as type of case
- Determining type of case often means listening to the client’s story and then making a judgment call as to what “type” of law this would be categorized as (This will be part of orientation)
- Do a “frequency check” to see if the client has utilized any of our clinics in the past, and if so, what it was regarding
- Interact with law students and/or attorneys when they come to get a client
- Notify them of any issues they should be aware of regarding the client
- Enter client information into the MVLC database (currently only at the MJC)
- Maintain client confidentiality
- If necessary, provide “priority cards” to clients who will not be able to be seen due to time restraints so that they can be seen first at a later clinic
- Answer questions clients may have and provide referrals, if necessary.
- Students should be prepared to work in a professional environment
Commitment/Requirements: 2-3 hours once a week.
