Description of Agency/Activities: Project EXCEL is a program of Wisconsin Community Services, a non-profit agency with the mission of promoting social justice. Project EXCEL uses a treatment philosophy to serve at-risk middle and high school youth in the Milwaukee area in order prepare them to be successful in a traditional school environment. The students that come to Project EXCEL may be involved in the juvenile justice system or have otherwise been removed from their original school.
Student Role in Agency: Students will assist in the coordination and implementation of monthly family gatherings for the families of the youth at Project EXCEL. Service Learners will be interacting directly with the youth in the development of these gatherings, as well as volunteering at the actual events. Service Learners can also expect to plan and implement large group sports and games during their time with the youth.
Commitment: The ideal service learning well be able to conduct themselves in a professional and responsible manner while working with at-risk teens. Service learners will be expected to fill out a standard application and pass a background check. 1.5 to 2 hours per week is required. Students will need to bring an ID to their on-site orientations in order to complete a background check.
