Description of Agency/Activities: The Salvation Army is an international non-profit Christian charitable organization founded in 1865 and serving the Milwaukee area since 1889. The Emergency Lodge (here for 20+ years) is an expression of one the Salvation Army's most traditional ministries, demonstrating the love of God by serving people in need without discrimination. The Emergency Lodge has many services, including: clinic services for medical and psychiatric needs; a Children's Center, offering educational and recreational programs for children at the Lodge; respite care; job development and placement services; homeless family support programs; community case management programs, a transitional housing program and other programs for families transitioning out of the shelter. At the Lodge are single residents and families. There are 100 beds; the average stay is 30-60 days. Contact with the whole family is possible at this site.
Student Role in Agency: Students are needed in the following program during the school year:
Commitment: Orientation plus 2-3 hours per week during the semester.
Special Features of Agency: A sensitivity to the issues of homelessness and to the needs of children is needed for this site. The Salvation Army does not promote any particular Christian denomination. This agency caters to the needs of a very distinct group of people who have often felt the harsh realities of life. This agency promotes respect toward all people regardless of circumstance.
