Description of Agency/Activities: A shelter for battered women and their children, it is one of two battered women's shelters in Milwaukee. Sojourner provides temporary shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence. It provides a safe atmosphere for the women and their children. They may have to stay for up to a month, or a little longer in some cases. When the families are staying at the shelter, women are given responsibilities and must attend house meetings and group support meetings. During certain periods of the day childcare is arranged for the children. The Children's program offers educational as well as support services for children who have experienced domestic violence. Service Learning students will be involved with a variety of skill building activities with the children. This may include working one-on-one with reading skills, social skills such as manners, feelings/emotions, assertiveness and self-esteem, teaching life skills, establishing goals and motivation, and safety skills.
Student Role in Agency: Students will assist with the Children's Programming department, where they will interact with the children and help out with different group activities/supervision.
