Days/Hours of Operation: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10:00am-12:00pm
Description of Agency/Activities: The Senior Center provides social,
recreational, educational, nutritional, health services to ambulatory
older adults, particularly those who are Hispanic, in order to increase
their social integration, decrease their isolation in the community, and
facilitate access to community resources. Programming components
include:
- Serving as a Milwaukee County Department on Aging (MCDA) Senior
Meal Program site seven days a week; - Offering a diverse activity program including: arts and crafts
(i.e. quilting, ceramics, performance and visual arts, dance), physical
fitness, ESL classes, computer literacy, table and board games, beauty
salon services, special celebrations (i.e. holidays, birthdays),
cultural presentations, field trips, intergenerational activities,
gardening, reading, etc. - Providing health, educational, and social services.
Speakers from the community offer information on relevant topics
weekly. - An on-site nurse and nurse interns provide preventative health
screenings and checkups, with referrals to primary care physicians when
necessary. - Transportation to and from the Senior Center provided Monday
through Friday.
Student Role in Agency:
- Program Assistant: Service learners will assist the program coordinator and staff with daily duties and assist seniors with computer usage and basic classes, lunch hour duties, etc.
*Knowledge of Spanish is necessary for this position.
Unique Features of the Agency: This is a great opportunity to
practice the Spanish language and to learn about the diversity of Latino
culture in the context of an aging population.
Commitment: 2 - 3 hours per week throughout the semester.
Since Service Learners will be working directly with UCC clients, it is required that volunteers be outgoing and personable, show initiative, and enjoy interacting with clients of all ages. They need to own their placement and work to make it a good fit by sharing feedback and being proactive.
