Description of Agency/Activities: A shelter for battered women and their children, it is one of two battered women's shelters in Milwaukee. Sojourner provides temporary shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence. It has a total capacity of 36. The shelter provides a safe atmosphere for the women and their children. They may stay for up to a month, or a little longer in some cases. When the families are staying at the shelter, women are given responsibilities and must attend house meetings and group support meetings. During certain periods of the day childcare is arranged for the children. There is a 24-hour crisis line run from Sojourner and whenever a police officer is brought in on a domestic violence call, they are mandated to phone in the incident to Sojourner Truth House. Sojourner keeps records and statistics on calls from both the police and the crisis line.

Student Role in Agency: Assist with childcare for resident children. The children range in age from infants to pre-teens. There are organized activities and a play room open for the children only during the childcare periods. The children always look forward to childcare and are generally enthusiastic. Males are encouraged to apply.

Commitment: Training plus three hours a week for the semester. Training takes place on two weekday evenings (5:30 pm-9:00 pm, dates TBA). Training is mandatory, if you can not attend a two-evening training, we ask that you choose another site for service learning.
