August 2022
Dear Faculty, Staff and Students in the Klingler College of Arts & Sciences,
Happy New (Academic) Year! Welcome back to all returning students; welcome to incoming
graduate students; welcome to transfer students; and welcome to our new first-time
undergraduates, members of the Class of 2026.
This time in the academic calendar provides opportunities for celebration and reflection.
Many of our new full-time faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences attended the President’s
welcome dinner. The University’s Office of Student Development hosted a series of
wonderful programs as part of New Student, Transfer Student and Family Orientation;
I have loved meeting so many new members of the Marquette community. The month of
August is a time of significant transitions. Through it all, I hope you will find
moments for reflection. Pay attention to what is happening around you and within you.
If you need help, just ask. I want to encourage students in particular to reach out
to faculty and staff. We are here to support you in your academic journey.
I believe this year is going to be a great one. Our College priorities for 2022–23
include student success, research and sustainability. Student success means challenging
and supporting all students to realize their potential here at Marquette and after
graduation. We have implemented a number of programs to support students, including
our new first-year seminar ARSC 1953 Exploring Arts and Sciences; specific strategies
to help students in areas like Chemistry, Math and Physics; course-assigned tutors
in targeted social sciences courses; a Student Ambassadors program; and renewed support for faculty and staff advisors. In research, our College continues
to lead the campus in securing grants. Across all of our disciplinary areas—humanities,
social sciences and natural and computational sciences—our faculty garner national
fellowships and awards, publish in prestigious venues and reach a wide public through
nationally and internationally prominent work. The College pursues sustainability
in a number of ways. We continue to identify strategies to be the best possible stewards
of resources, while working with donors and friends to strengthen their already robust
support of the College. And we celebrate the appointment of our first-ever Arts &
Sciences Sustainability Fellow, Dr. Tim Tharp, who is working with Facilities and other colleagues across campus to catalyze Marquette’s
sustainability efforts.
In these ways and more, our staff, faculty and students continue to pursue Marquette’s
Catholic, Jesuit mission and values. We are notable in Arts & Sciences for our robust
engagement with broader communities around Milwaukee and far beyond. This integration
across areas and disciplines is what makes us say that for Arts & Sciences at Marquette,
the difference is in the “and.”
Personally, I am embarking on a new initiative aimed to foster student success, faculty
and staff engagement, sustainability and community relationships: piloting a Faculty
In Residence (FIR) program at Marquette. My husband and I have moved to a campus apartment
and are already working closely with the Office of Residential Life to strengthen
connections between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. We hope to make it easier
for interested faculty and staff to live on or near campus. Please invite us to your
campus events and let me know if you would like to learn more about the Faculty In
Residence (FIR) pilot program.
As always, please feel free to contact me with questions, concerns or suggestions. I appreciate hearing from you and exploring
ways we can all work together for the common good.
Dr. Heidi Bostic Dean, Klingler College of Arts and Sciences
