Biomedical sciences professor funded to study alcohol abuse
Dr. Robert Peoples, associate professor of biomedical sciences, received a five-year, $1.3 million award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health. He studies the molecular mechanisms through which alcohol produces its effects. Read more.
Exercise science professor to examine age, gender differences in fatigue
Dr. Sandra Hunter, associate professor of exercise science, received a $411,000 grant award from the National Institute of Aging. Her proposal, Neuromuscular Fatigue: Age and Sex Differences, examines cognitive demand and genetic factors that can contribute to greater age-related neuromuscular fatigue and pain. Read more.
HCOP receives funding renewal
Dr. Lawrence Pan, professor and chair of physical therapy, received funding
for the next three years ($650,000 per year, pending federal appropriations) for Marquette's Health Careers Opportunity Program. The program's goal is to rectify health disparities in the work force and delivery of care to underserved segments of our population. Since its founding, Marquette's HCOP has graduated 863 practitioners from disadvantaged backgrounds in dentistry, physical therapy, speech pathology, clinical laboratory science and physician assistant studies. College celebrates 15th birthday
The College of Health Sciences commemorated its 15th year at its annual convocation in September. Dean Bill Cullinan shared highlights of each department/program and presented College of Health Sciences Teaching Awards to Dr. Paul Gasser and David Leigh. Michelle Raclawski, director of academic business affairs for the college, won the inaugural Dr. Jack C. Brooks Excellence in Service Award, which was named in honor of the college's founding dean. PT professor receives grant award for stroke research
Dr. Allison Hyngstrom, assistant professor of physical therapy, received a program award from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin. Hyngstrom will examine sub-cortical mechanisms of neuromuscular fatigue in the chronic stroke population and the relationship with walking function. Read more.
Speech pathology professor receives grant from the National Science Foundation
Dr. Jeffrey Berry, assistant professor of speech pathology, and Dr. Mike Johnson, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, received a $176,431 grant from the National Science Foundation. They will collect tongue movement and acoustic data from American and native Chinese speakers to develop a database analyzing pronunciation variations of non-native (Mandarin) speakers of English. PA students win Challenge Bowl
Marquette's physician assistant students emerged victorious at the 2011 Wisconsin Association of Physician Assistants challenge bowl, a Jeopardy-style match of medical knowledge between teams from the state's PA programs. All three Marquette teams advanced to the finals. Quinn Sesston also received the Paul S. Robinson Award for exemplary service and outstanding leadership. Read more.
Alumni Team races to the finish line
The College of Health Sciences Alumni Association sponsored a team for this year's Briggs & Al's Run & Walk for Children's Hospital on Sept. 17th. More than 30 CHS alumni, faculty and students participated.

- Health Professions Career Fair: Tuesday, Oct. 25th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union, followed by a gathering at Caffreys Pub.
- The College of Health Sciences Alumni Association Fish Fry and Beer Sampling on Friday, Nov. 4 at 5:30 p.m., at the Horny Goat Hideaway.
- Health Sciences in Washington, D.C.: Dean Cullinan and several faculty will give an update on the college's cutting-edge neuroscience research at a Marquette reception on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the Cosmos Club.
- Department of Physical Therapy Open House: Wednesday, Nov. 30th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tour the three new research and teaching laboratories and the new PT clinic and learn about the new graduate programs in Clinical and Translational Rehabilitation Health Science.
- Continuing Education: The Alumni Association will sponsor a four-hour CE course, Ethical Applications in Clinical Practice, for physical therapists and speech language pathologists on campus on Saturday, March 10, 2012.
- 90th Anniversary of the Dental Hygiene Program: All dental hygiene alumni are invited to a celebration luncheon and continuing education opportunity on Friday, July 26th, 2013.
