Marquette Sports Rehabilitation Clinic accepting patients
The College of Health Sciences' nationally ranked Department of Physical Therapy recently opened the Marquette Sports Rehabilitation Clinic, a full-service rehabilitation/sports medicine clinic for Marquette students and employees. Services are provided by clinic director Jeff Wilkens, PT '99, and Francisco Rivera, H Sci '02, PT '04. Advanced-level PT students will have the opportunity to observe and help out the clinic in other ways.
Researchers join Marquette Obesity Venture (MOVe)
MOVe is a new center that promotes collaboration by Marquette faculty and community partners to generate, disseminate and apply knowledge of the mechanisms, prevention and treatment of pediatric and adult obesity. Led by Dr. Linda Vaughn, professor of biomedical sciences, the center combines the expertise of the College of Health Sciences, College of Nursing and the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences.
College welcomes new faculty
Dr. Murray Blackmore recently joined the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He comes to Marquette from the University of Miami School of Medicine and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. His research focuses on axonal regeneration in the injured spinal cord, and he recently was awarded a grant from the Craig H. Nielsen Foundation to test novel genes capable of promoting functional recovery following spinal cord injury. Dr. Kristof Kipp joined the Department of Physical Therapy's Program in Exercise Science. He received his Ph.D. from Oregon State University and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Michigan. Kipp's primary research focus is on the prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries using combinations of biomechanical and electrophysiological techniques.
PA program helps start new VA residency
Marquette's Department of Physician Assistant Studies is partnering with the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee to begin the new Physician Assistant Primary Care Residency Program. This year-long program, one of just six in the nation to receive funding from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, will provide an in-depth, focused PA residency to train physician assistant residents in management of common acute and chronic conditions seen in veteran patients.
Faculty meet with alumni in D.C.
In November, the Marquette Club of Washington, D.C., invited area alumni to learn more about the advanced research happening in the College of Health Sciences. Approximately 70 guests joined Dean William E. Cullinan and four CHS faculty members at the Cosmos Club to learn more about the latest research involving advanced technology being used to treat brain injury and stroke, the relationship between stress and drug addiction, the latest research involving how our bodies react to stress and the cutting-edge steps being taken to treat schizophrenia.
Alumni Award winners announced
The College of Health Sciences will celebrate this year's Alumni Award winners with a reception and brunch on Saturday, April 28. This year's honorees are: Distinguished Alumna of the Year - Dr. Katherine J. Sullivan, PT '78, of Pasadena, Calif.; Service to Marquette - Pamela Suplicki Brilowski, Dent Hy '84, of Waukesha, Wis.; A Person for Others - Susan Schober Kinosian, PT '72, of Wauwatosa, Wis.; and
Young Alumna of the Year - Dr. Ashley Carson Ferraro, Med Tech '95, of Kansas City, Mo.

Medical Global Brigades travel to Honduras
Each January and March a group of students, faculty, alumni and health care professionals travel to Honduras through Global Brigades. The student-run chapter within the College of Health Sciences carries out the mission of the international organization, which is to provide a holistic model for sustainable health care in underserved rural communities. See photos from the group's recent trip. Former CHS Young Alumna of the Year, Dr. Shital Chauhan, H Sci '04, PT '06, is CEO and co-founder of Global Brigades.
