Errol E. Harris was a distinguished philosopher who lived to be 101, and whose active career as scholar, teacher, and author spanned eight decades. He inspired several generations of students, many of whom went on to become philosophers themselves. His remarkable memoir tells the story of a life in which he witnessed and participated in many of the central events of a century of turmoil, including his participation in the struggles against Nazism, apartheid, and nuclear and environmental threats to humanity.
He was the author, editor, or co-editor of 30 books, and taught at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, Edinburgh University, Yale University, Connecticut College, the University of Kansas, and Northwestern University. Active as an author well into his nineties, he published Reflections on the Problem of Consciousness in 2006, a major contribution to philosophy of mind, and Twenty-First Century Democratic Renaissance in 2008.
This autobiography tells his story from his childhood in early-twentieth century South Africa through his extensive academic career in the United States and his later years in the English Lake District. The many people touched by his life and work, as well as others who may have heard of him only passingly or not at all, will find this a fascinating volume giving a unique perspective on a philosopher’s century.
