Board of Trustees endorses strategic plan

The Board of Trustees endorsed the Marquette University strategic plan, Beyond Boundaries: Setting the Course for Marquette’s Future, on May 1, following a campus-wide, 18-month planning effort. University President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., thanked "everyone who contributed their time, talents, energy and input to ensure the plan reflects our collective hopes and dreams for Marquette." Landry Patrick Landry, Arts '08, was recognized by the Museum of Science and Industry – Chicago’s Center for the Advancement for Science Education for his commitment to science education. He was also named as an "Honored Staff" for his commitment to science education, participating in the Science Minors Club for at least three years. Landry is a 6th grade teacher and assistant principal at St. Gall’s Grade School in Chicago.

Bestor and TownsendChristine Elizabeth Bestor, Arts '06, and (Steven) Todd Townsend, Comm '05, of Chicago were engaged on May 15, 2012 in front of the St. Joan of Arc Chapel on the Marquette campus. They will be married in June in Milwaukee.

Brynda Anniversary Chris Brynda, Bus Ad '88, and Eileen (Lynch) Brynda, Arts '89, of Willow Springs, Ill., celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. The couple was married on April 24, 1993, at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Chicago. There were 42 Marquette alumni in attendance.

Save the date for June 13 at the next Marquette Club of Chicago's quarterly Breakfast Club at the Marquette University's Chicago office at 140 S. Dearborn. Register here. Class of 2013

It's a rite of spring. For several years, Marquette alumni have offered their words of wisdom to graduating seniors. The challenge: do it in 13 words or less for the Class of 2013. Share your advice here or post it on Marquette’s Facebook page by May 13. Select responses will be highlighted in June’s general and special graduates alumni newsletters welcoming them as the most recent members of the 110,000 Marquette alumni worldwide. Ring Out Ahoya!

Reconnect, reminisce and celebrate at Alumni Reunion
Weekend, July 25 - 28

Join us as we welcome the five- to 45-year reunion classes, our 50-year Golden Jubilee class and several affinity groups back home to Marquette University. Alumni Reunion Weekend will include class parties, a Saturday Block Party, city and campus tours and more!

All alumni, regardless of reunion year, are invited back to campus for the inaugural "Marquette Fest" on Saturday night, featuring live music, food and fun in Westowne Square.

More than 2,500 Marquette alumni and guests attended Alumni National Awards weekend, April 25-27, to honor 53 extraordinary leaders, including Dr. John Wakerly, Eng '70 (Glenview), for All-University Professional Achievement, and ten other alumni awardees from Chicago. See who you may know from Chicago and beyond as university awardees; make a gift to Marquette in their honor; or send a congratulatory note.

Weather doesn't stop outstanding CIRCLES entrepreneurship program
Despite flood conditions throughout Chicago on April 18, the CIRCLES "Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Workplace" program was a highly successful gathering of alumni and friends. Special thanks to Acquity, which hosted the event, for live streaming the program and including panelists who could not attend via video conference.

Offering thanks: Scholarship Celebration unites students
and benefactors
Scholarship Celebration Luncheon
For many Marquette students, scholarships can be imperative to receiving a college education. The April 11 Scholarship Celebration Luncheon, led by Marquette President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., set the stage for 150 students to meet, reminisce and offer sincere thanks to benefactors who help to make their Marquette experience possible.

College of Nursing dean named a Woman of Influence
Margaret Callahan, dean of nursing, was named a 2013 Business Journal Woman of Influence, honored in the "Mentor" category. She and other awardees will be honored at an awards event at the Delta Center and in The Business Journal feature, both on June 7. She joined Marquette in 2008 after serving as both professor and chair of adult health nursing and program director for the nurse anesthesia program at the Rush University College of Nursing.

Four professors honored with Teaching Excellence Awards at Père Marquette Dinner
Four Marquette faculty members were honored with Teaching Excellence Awards - the university's highest teaching honor - at the Père Marquette Dinner on May 2: Dr. Stephen Franzoi, professor of psychology; Dr. Douglas Lobner, professor of biomedical sciences; and Dr. Robert Lowe, professor of educational policy and leadership; received the John P. Raynor, S.J., Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Richard Jones, professor of social and cultural sciences, received the Robert and Mary Gettel Award for Teaching Excellence.

Marquette in the News
An article in the March ChicagoTribune.com entitled "When a parent is stage struck," featured Todd Denning, Marquette University director, instructor in the performing arts department. He discussed how some "stage parents" push their children too far.

Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success by Phil Jackson In collaboration with the Union League Club, Marquette alumni are invited to attend the Authors Group luncheon and program. Phil Jackson will present his book, Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success. During his storied career as head coach of the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, Phil Jackson won more championships than any coach in the history of professional sports by never straying from his coaching style of inspiring and challenging his players.
