The Seminar on Phenomenology and Hermeneutics is an outgrowth of a group which began in 1996 on the initiative of Dr. Pol Vandevelde and Dr. John Meech in order to read and discuss the works of Edmund Husserl, the founder of phenomenology. The group, which continues to investigate central texts in phenomenology and hermeneutics, has also provided a forum for graduate students preparing theses in philosophy and theology to present and defend their ideas.

In 2001, the Seminar on Phenomenology and Hermeneutics was initiated with joint support of Dr. John Jones, Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Fr. Philip Rossi, Chair of the Department of Theology, and Dr. Michael McKinney, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. This seminar was established to invite scholars outside the university to share their research in phenomenology and hermeneutics with our graduate students and faculty.
