Description of Agency/Activities: The AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin, Inc. (ARCW) is a private, nonprofit health and social service agency that works to confront and alleviate the effects of HIV disease in Wisconsin. ARCW provides aggressive HIV education and prevention, access to comprehensive services for people affected by HIV disease, clinical research on HIV treatment, and HIV advocacy.
Student Role in Agency: The following positions are available. Please note which student role is being used for your course.
Work in the food pantry: ARCW has a food pantry for their clients. Students working here will help with stocking the pantry, packing bags, and assisting clients with obtaining and transporting food. Students will be working and interacting with those who are HIV positive. Hours of Operation: Mon-Thu 9am-5pm NO FRI HOURS
Operate the HIV Information Hotline: Students will answer the statewide hotline and provide callers with needed information on HIV testing, crisis intervention, sexually transmitted disease and general health issues. Students shadow experienced operators before making calls themselves. Hours of Operation: Mon 12-4pm, Tue 10am-2pm, Wed 12-4pm, Thu 10am-4pm, NO FRI HOURSWork in the Prevention Services Department: ARCW has limited placements in this department. Students working here will be focused on the prevention aspect of HIV and AIDS. Scheduling will occur at orientation, so make sure to bring your class schedule! *Please note: The location of the prevention department is 3716 W. Wisconsin Avenue. Any student chosen for a position in the prevention department will receive information regarding this at orientation. ALL students will attend orientation at the 820 N. Plankinton location.
Other: Students will be working in a professional environment with sensitive information, therefore professional behavior is expected. The site depends on the volunteers each week, so students should be on time and ready to go every week.
Commitment: Orientation and training listed above, plus 2-3 hours per week for the semester.
