Funded by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund and Joy Engine, and administered by the Lynden, the Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists provide unrestricted funds for artists to create new work or complete work in progress. Since 2003, the program has made a significant investment in the greater Milwaukee arts community, encouraging artists to live and make work here. The Fellowships also create—through the jurying process and culminating exhibition—an opportunity to promote local artistic production to a national audience.

The 2022 Fellows were chosen from a field of 165 applicants by a panel of three jurors: Jade Powers, then assistant curator at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri and now Curator of Contemporary Art at the Harn Museum of Art; Victoria Sung, then associate curator of visual arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota and now Phyllis C. Wattis Senior Curator at BAMPFA; and Toccarra A. H. Thomas, a media and performance artist, film programmer, and arts administrator who is currently director of the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The entire jurying process was conducted virtually, culminating in virtual studio visits with the six finalists in the Established Artist category and—for the first time—the six Emerging Artist finalists.
