Building on the success of the 2018 unGALA: Haggerty Street Party, the Friends of the Haggerty Museum of Art are excited to present another lively, dynamic, and perhaps a bit absurd fundraiser. Join us on Saturday, September 7th at the We Energies Public Service Building for the 2019 unGALA: Surrealist Ball – a night full of revelry, creativity, and FUN! All proceeds benefit the Haggerty's Exhibition and Education Programs.
Celebrating the Haggerty’s 35th anniversary, the Surrealist Ball is inspired by Madonna of Port Lligat, a painting by Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí that is part of the Museum’s collection. We’re transforming the We Energies Public Service Building into a Surrealist tableau, inviting guests to a modern-day version of Marie-Hélène de Rothschild’s 1972 Surrealist Ball. Unleash your imagination, embrace “where the strange seems ordinary and the ordinary seem strange,” and experience an evening of unprecedented extravagance full of inspired costumes, dreamy culinary and drink delights, daring music, dancing, art installations, performance, games, and more!
De Rothschild’s guests donned fancy dress with Surrealist headpieces, wearing everything from subtle masks and headbands to elaborate makeup and over-the-top costumes. Although Surrealist inspired dress is not required for the Haggerty’s Surrealist Ball, guests are highly encouraged to throw caution to the wind and indulge in the fantasy. Dress up creatively wearing a masquerade costume that conveys the spirit of Surrealism, and you might win the $250 grand prize awarded for best costume. Think fancy, fabulous and nonsensical; add glitter to a set of antlers, wear three masquerade masks at once, paint a third or fourth eye onto your forehead, put a birdcage in your hair, glue a clock to your top hat. Look to Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, Blitz Club, Lady Gaga, Alexander McQueen, Leigh Bowery, Club Kids, and New Romantics to get you started.
And let’s not forget that this is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Haggerty Museum of Art, so there will be plenty of opportunities to show your support for the most accessible museum in Milwaukee through offbeat games, fantastic auctions, and raising your ludicrous paddle.
Our Surrealistic vision for the evening is thus: dreamy, symbolic, surprising juxtapositions, supernatural, psychedelic, absurd! We guarantee an evening that will engage all your senses, entertain your spirit, and amuse (or at least confuse) one and all!
