Biographical Note

Sister Joeann Daley (1940-), O.P., is a Sinsinawa Dominican religious sister from Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin.

In April 1992, she accompanied Sister Mary Ewens, O.P., Executive Director of the Conrad N. Hilton Fund for Sisters, who held a series of 10 meetings in East-Central Europe for representatives of Catholic congregations of women religious regarding available funds for community development in their respective countries. 250 representatives from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, and Ukraine attended, which were held in Udine (Italy), Budapest, Prague, Warsaw, Cracow, and Lviv (Ukraine).

In conjunction with those meetings, Sister Joeann Daley videotaped the group discussions regarding the suffering and spiritual captivity experienced by the religious sisters. They revealed widespread poverty; the forced eviction of religious sisters from their homes by the Communist authorities; and the forced work in labor camps by the religious sisters and all local people, which forged strong mutual bonds of solidarity.
