Concrete Laboratory
Use in undergraduate instruction
Civil engineering involves the study of the engineering mechanics and properties of a range of construction materials. The concrete laboratory is used in the course CEEN 3320 — behavior and properties in engineering materials — to give students hands-on experience in performing standard tests on fresh and hardened concrete. Students also design and prepare a concrete mixture to meet a specific set of specifications.
The laboratory has the necessary equipment to conduct standard ASTM tests such as:
- Compressive strength — cylinders, cubes, blocks
- Splitting tensile strength — cylinders
- Modulus of rupture — beams
- Poisson’s ratio
- Sieve analysis
- Specific gravity of aggregates and cement
- Free moisture or absorption of fine and coarse aggregate
- Air content of fresh concrete
- Slump of fresh concrete
- Freeze-thaw of concrete
The laboratory has an environmental room to control the temperature and humidity for the curing of specimens.
