El Premio Mario Vargas Llosa
Sigma Delta Pi and the the American Association of Spanish and Portuguese co-sponsor their Mario Vargas Llosa Award, granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish. Check back in the spring of 2013 for the official nomination form and award criteria.

El Premio Gabriela Mistral
Any/every active chapter may nominate one outstanding student per year for El Premio Gabriela Mistral. The awardee, who may be either a graduate or undergraduate student, must be an active member of Sigma Delta Pi, as defined in the By-laws. Nominations, together with supporting documentation, including several letters of recommendation and a current transcript, should be e-mailed to the Executive Director. Winners will be given a handsome certificate and a book award.

Recent Accomplishments of the Chapter:

For the 20th consecutive year (1992 to present) Gamma Gamma has been declared a "Chapter of Honor and Merit", a distinction only given to the ten best chapters in the country for their outstanding services in various areas (e.g., community, academic, social, etc.). The decision is based on the chapter's Activities Report for a given year. Gamma Gamma is the only chapter in the nation to have achieved this honor 20 years in a row.

Awards given to Chapter Members during 2010-11:

Two chapter members were awarded Sigma Delta Pi's Summer-2011 Scholarships: Ms. Nicole Thompson (Quito, Ecuador) and Ms. Maritza Martin (Cuenca, Ecuador).

Ms. Brooke McEwen was granted the GABRIELA MISTRAL National AWARD for her outstanding services as Vice-President in charge of our major community activity: ESL Sunday lessons at St. Adalbert Church in the south side. Also, Ms. Mary Zuidema received a special certificate of recognition for her superb work as President of the chapter during 2010-11.

"Tertulia de los maites" from 7-9 every Wednesday the Tuertulia meets to practice, an informal social event. At Holthusen 4th floor OIE office. Come anytime, this is not a tutoring service but a social occasion to use Spanish.
