For Arabic, Chinese, Classical Greek, Italian, or Latin
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers courses in elementary and intermediate Arabic, Chinese, Classical Greek, Italian, and Latin. In all these programs, the department strives to develop academic excellence in our students within a context of strong ethical and moral foundations based on faith, while providing opportunities for students to assume positions of leadership and service to the human community through the power instilled by competence in a second language and culture.
Most students come to Marquette having taken many years of a language in both junior and senior high school, experienced immersion in a foreign culture, or both. Many students wish to continue pursuing their passions for foreign cultures and literatures, and we encourage them to do so. The goal of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is to place incoming students in the most appropriate level of foreign language study based on their previous exposure to the language.
Placement in Arabic, Chinese, Classical Greek, Italian, or Latin:
If you plan to study one of these languages, please complete the Foreign Language Placement Survey. Placement Survey
- If you are beginning the study of one of these languages as a new language, you should register for 1001: Elementary Language 1 course.
- If you have completed two years or less of the language in high school, and you plan to continue with the study of that language, you should register for 1001: Elementary Language 1 course.
- If you have completed three years or more of high school study register for 2001: Intermediate Language 1 course.
- If you are a native or near-native speaker of Arabic, Chinese, or Italian you are not eligible to register in the elementary or intermediate levels of your native language for credit. These courses are designed for students who are beginning the study of the language. Registration in these courses may result in no credit being awarded for the course. Students should consult with the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures regarding the appropriate level and course for which to register.
- Students may not place themselves, or change their placement without departmental approval. Registration in a course lower than the approved level may result in no credit being awarded for the course.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will review the results of the Foreign Language Placement Survey, in particular, the number of years that the language was studied, grades earned, etc. The Department reserves the right to change the student’s placement in a course if it believes that the student has not been placed at the appropriate level, or in the most appropriate course based on the student’s exposure to the language. Students who believe they were misplaced should consult the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
