met each other on a blind date while attending the university, have four children who have also graduated from their parents’ alma mater, and a fifth who is due to graduate in May. Add to that Pat’s parents, her two sisters, Tom’s brother, his niece, his brother-in-law and two daughter-in-laws, and it’s easy to see why this family cheers on the blue and gold.

In fact, in addition to traveling and spending time with their children and grandchildren, Tom, who earned an MU basketball letter in 1963, and Pat enjoy taking in Marquette games in their spare time. As dedicated fans, they support the teams in a variety of ways, such as cheering them on from the stands and providing contributions to the Blue & Gold Fund and for the Al McGuire Center. In addition, Tom is the past president of the M Club, the alumni organization for letter winners.
While the couple enjoys and supports the school’s athletics programs, it is the university’s mission and Catholic, Jesuit values that have made the biggest impact on their lives.
“Marquette gave us the base education to begin our careers, and the parameters of how to proceed and pursue our careers,” said Tom, who is currently the vice president and general manager of Paul Flagg Leather, a leather manufacturing company based in China. Tom works out of his home in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, by relying heavily on a cell phone and laptop. Pat worked in the field of medical technology for a few years after graduation, and then became a full-time homemaker, raising the Packee clan.
The couple lives out Marquette’s mission of service by volunteering for a number of organizations. Pat helps at a local hospice and in the health room at a grade school. Tom serves on the Waukesha Area Catholic Conference Board; is president of the Oconomowoc Hospital Foundation; and serves on the Marquette University Athletic Board, to name just a few.
Marquette University has made quite an impression on the Packees. “We definitely would and have recommended MU to high school students,” Tom said. “As the physical plant at MU improves, it gets to be easier for high school students to put the school on their college list. And the Jesuit educational reputation has always been a ‘selling’ point at Marquette.”
