Since the late 1950s, Marquette Libraries' Department of Special Collections has been home to the original manuscripts of J.R. R. Tolkien's beloved classics, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Due to the manuscripts' fragility and value, they are not made available for private viewing or study. Researchers who visit Marquette study the manuscripts digitally through the Anduin™ database.
The dates for the 2026 showings will be announced mid-December.
These public showings coincide roughly with Tolkien Reading Day and Hobbit Day. They will take place in the conference center on the lower level of Raynor Library. Each showing begins with a presentation by the collection's curator. Ample time will follow for attendees to view the manuscripts on display.
The events are free.
Attendance at each event is limited to 60 persons.
Advance registration is required. Registration will open one month before the showing.
The events are not recommended for children under eight years of age.
