1. Monahan named director of core curriculum

Provost John Pauly has named Dr. Michael Monahan, associate professor of philosophy, as director of the Core Curriculum. Monahan succeeds Dr. Christine Krueger, associate professor of English, who served as director for a year beyond the normal three-year term.

Monahan joined the Marquette faculty in 2003 after completing his Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. He is a graduate of Purdue University and earned his master’s degree at U of I.

“Dr. Monahan has taught two of the required courses in our Core of Common Studies and brings a strong belief in the value of a broad-based liberal arts foundation to this position,” Pauly said.

Monahan specializes in social and political philosophy, focusing on issues of oppression and liberation, especially race and racism. He is also the faculty mentor and head instructor for one of Marquette’s martial arts clubs.

2. Rev. William Kurz appointed Wade Chair for fall 2009

Rev. William Kurz, professor of theology specializing in the exegesis (explanation and critical interpretation) of the New Testament, will serve as the Rev. Francis Wade Chair for fall 2009. Marquette’s Wade Chair is offered for one or two semesters to a Jesuit who has demonstrated excellence in both teaching and scholarship to serve as a role model and mentor to junior faculty in the designated department of the college or school.

Father Kurz’s scholarly interests focus particularly on Luke-Acts; Johannine writings; narrative, reader and rhetorical criticism; biblical intertextuality; and the renewed exegetical movement toward increasingly theological interpretation.

Kurz is the author of more than 40 articles and seven books, including his most recent, Reading the Bible as God's Own Story: A Catholic Approach for Bringing Scripture to Life (2007). He is currently writing a theological commentary on the book of Acts for the 16-volume Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, which is to be completed later this year.

He is also co-planning, with leaders of the Theology Department’s Scripture Project, a one-day interdisciplinary symposium on theological interpretation of Scripture on Friday, Sept. 25. He will present his Wade Lecture at that time.
